Repairing Abs Kayak

This is true of polyethylene because it is a linear plastic (i.e. not crosslinked). if you have a kayak that is thermoformed out of a plastic like abs (which is crosslinked), then it requires a totally different repair procedure, and melting it together won't work.. I've seen people use a soldering iron and a piece kf abs plastic to repair tears in the hull but the best answer is short and simple to use for small holes: epoxy putty. just follow instructions on the packaging, fill the hole with a small (few mm) overlap inside and out and if you want sand down when hard and paint.. Trylon abs plastic is not as impact resistant as polyethylene, but is more abrasion resistant, resists fading in sunlight, and (best of all) won't oil can on your car rack and warp like polyethylene boats can..

Unlike fiberglass or rotomolded kayaks, thermoformed kayaks are typically formed over a mold rather than inside of one. with a female mold, the mold determines the surface quality, but with thermoforming the surface quality is already in the sheet and our job is not to mess it up. there is another reason for male molding..
